4 Tips to set up a good Social Media account

🌙 Short names are the account’s best friends
We all know the struggle with finding the right name for our accounts on social media. Most of the time we use one, which we have had since our teenage years. This is not always the best decision, because as teenagers, we can have pretty weird names, which we shouldn’t use when we want to make it a bit more professional. (If you wanna just create it as your personal account then you can use whatever you want. But I’m talking more about professional accounts). Short names are useful because it’s easier to remember them, and it’s also easier to have them in emails or links when you have only limited space for them. For example, Twitter only has a limited word space that you can type. When you want to promote your link but also want to text something as well, it’s harder when your nickname is loooooooong. The same goes when it comes to Graphics. For example, making business cards. It’s easier to design them when you have short names and links on them. So before you type in a random account name, think about something people can remember and what is short. If you use a nickname, use a short one. If you use your real name, make it shorter

Examples:
'rowcat' instead of 'rowcat.theBubble18'
'jenart' instead of 'jennifersartworld'
'ta.filder' instead of 'tim.anthony.filder'

🌙 Using the same names everywhere (if they are free)
Also important is, to use the same name over all the platforms. Sometimes it’s not possible because the name is already taken but try as much as you can to do at least the same names with maybe one number or sign in it. I’m using for example everywhere rowcat. Only on Twitter do I have to use xrowcat. But you see I try to stay with my name as close as possible. It’s important because people love to google your names. And if you have the same name everywhere, it’s easier to follow you there and to find your work.

🌙 Corporate design as your brand
If you don’t know what Corporate design is, here is a short explanation.

"Coorperate design is part of the brand and identity of a company or person. Means that you use the same colors, fonts, text, signs, shapes, images, profilepics and logos, banner, buttons, product packages etc, on all platforms and contents."

This has the benefit, that people can recognize you way faster and can remember you more easily because you show up the same all the time. (that’s why it’s so hard to rebrand, because people, who know you in a specific way, can’t identify with you anymore when you change your appearance). For example, when people search for you and recognize your banner on Artstation which they know from Twitter, they are more likely to follow you there because they 100% know that’s you without even asking.

Two examples:

🌙 Stay in your niche
We artists are creative creatures and we love to try things out. And I LOVE that. When it comes to social media actually everything is allowed and to be honest, nobody can tell you what to do with your accounts. If you want to try all things out in different directions and you feel good with it, DO IT! But if you don’t really feel confident about that and you need a bit of help with what to post, then i would recommend staying in your niche.

What do i mean by that?
When you are an artist, stay with posting only art on your accounts. Stay away from personal posts about your pets, food, party pics, or travel journeys. People often stay longer when they know what to expect from you. If you have another hobby or passion for something out of art, let’s say playing guitar and singing, then just create a different account for that, so that people who have the same interests, can follow you for that. Maybe they are not interested in guitar videos and just wanna see your art. They most likely feel irritated about the difference and decide not to follow you for that. (of course not all but it’s common. I am the same. I search accounts that stay consistent with their posts). Happily, there is a good alternative on some social media sites. Like on Instagram, you have posts and stories which you can turn on and off if you like. I prefer posting only art on my account but go more random in my stories with motivational things, food, my daily life, studies, etc. If they don’t like it they can easily turn the stories off. So to make it easier to follow you, i would recommend staying in one niche.
